A screen preview is not a production test

Computer screens illuminate pixels, so extremely thin marks can appear sharper than they will on film or fabric. DTF production must print colour, place a white underbase, hold adhesive powder and bond the completed detail to textile fibres. A line that is technically visible on screen may not contain enough physical material to survive that process.

Why adhesive coverage matters

Adhesive powder bonds to the printed ink. Very small dots, narrow strokes and isolated specks have less surface area and may receive inconsistent adhesive coverage. They can lift during peeling, disappear during pressing or detach during washing. Fabric texture makes this more noticeable because a tiny detail may bridge only the tops of the fibres.

Common high-risk artwork

Problem areas include script-font hairlines, small copyright text, fine whiskers, tiny stars, narrow negative spaces, light distressed speckles and semi-transparent shadows. Accidental background-removal residue is also risky because it may print as a faint halo or receive a white underbase that was not visible on screen.

How to repair the design

Increase the thickness of important strokes, enlarge small type, simplify unnecessary distress and connect isolated elements where appropriate. Preview the design over both black and white backgrounds. Print a paper proof at final size to judge readability, but remember that paper cannot confirm adhesion. A physical transfer test remains the best production check.

Why did some distress disappear?

The smallest isolated marks may not have carried enough ink and adhesive to transfer reliably.

Can the printer simply add more ink to thin lines?

Changing production settings does not correct the geometry of a weak source file and can negatively affect the rest of the artwork.

Will upscaling make lines thicker?

Upscaling increases pixel dimensions but normally preserves the same relative line thickness. The artwork itself may need to be edited.

How can I check tiny text?

View it at final size, print a paper proof and confirm that every essential letter has adequate stroke weight and spacing.
