DTF FABRIC COMPATIBILITY GUIDE
The transfer is only half of the system—the garment’s fibres, finish, construction and colour also affect the result.
Cotton
Cotton is widely used for decorated T-shirts and hoodies because it tolerates common heat-press conditions and offers a familiar hand feel. Prepressing can remove moisture and wrinkles. Heavy texture, seams and garment treatments still affect contact, so test the exact style rather than assuming every cotton garment behaves identically.
Polyester
Polyester requires more caution because excessive heat can create platen marks, shine, scorching or dye migration. Dark sublimated and heavily dyed garments are especially high risk. Use the transfer instructions, minimize unnecessary heat exposure and test for colour movement after the garment cools.
Cotton-polyester blends
Blends combine characteristics of both fibres. They are common in retail apparel and often accept DTF well, but the polyester content can still introduce heat sensitivity or dye migration. Record successful settings for each garment SKU and colour instead of using one universal recipe.
Fleece, canvas and denim
Fleece and sweatshirts may contain moisture and have uneven surfaces. Canvas and denim can have pronounced texture or seams. Consistent pressure is essential, and raised construction must not prevent platen contact. A pressing pillow or alternate placement may be needed.
Performance and treated fabrics
Stretch garments, water-resistant finishes, nylon and performance fabrics can require specialized testing. Some surface treatments reduce adhesion, while elastic fabric can stress a dense design. Use smaller test transfers, confirm compatibility with the garment manufacturer and avoid promising results before a wash test.
