DTF Pressing & Washing Instructions
Use this page as your quick reference for applying Strong N Free DTF transfers. These settings are written for our premium hot-peel film and are not a universal recipe for transfers purchased from another printer.
Start with one test garment. Heat presses, fabrics, garment finishes and room conditions can change the result even when the display shows the correct temperature.

How To Apply Your Strong N Free Transfer
- Prepare the garment. Lay it flat and pre-press briefly to remove wrinkles and moisture. Keep collars, seams, zippers and pockets away from the pressing area. A pressing pillow can help when the surface is uneven.
- Position the transfer. Place the printed transfer where you want it with the design facing the garment. Check alignment before the press closes; use a ruler or placement guide for repeat orders.
- Press at 310°F for 8 seconds. Use heavy, even pressure across the full design. Pressure matters as much as the temperature. A press that closes unevenly may leave one edge bonded and another edge loose.
- Peel immediately. Open the press and pull the carrier away quickly while keeping the film low and close to the garment. Do not lift it straight upward. If a section lifts, stop, lay the carrier back down and review the troubleshooting section before continuing.
- Finish with a second press. Cover the design with a clean Teflon sheet and press for another 4 seconds. This finishing press helps complete the bond and gives the transfer its final surface.
Important: Our instructions are for a commercial heat press. A household iron or small craft press may create uneven heat and pressure, so results can vary. Test before committing an important garment or a full production run.
If A Transfer Lifts, Start Here
Most application problems come from pressure, actual platen temperature, moisture or an uneven pressing surface. Changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to identify. Adjust one factor, test again and record what worked.
Check pressure and contact
Heavy pressure must reach the whole transfer. Seams, drawstrings, pockets and thick collars can hold the platen away from the design. Move the obstruction off the platen or use the correct pressing support.
Remove garment moisture
Humidity, storage and shipping conditions can leave moisture in fabric. A short pre-press releases it and warms the application area. Allow steam to escape before positioning the transfer.
Review the fabric
Cotton, polyester and common blends are frequently suitable, but coatings, waterproof treatments, high-stretch fabric and heat-sensitive materials may need special testing. Follow the garment maker’s heat limits.

Washing & Care
Before the first wash
Wait at least 24 hours after pressing. This gives the applied transfer time to settle before it is exposed to laundering, heat and movement.
For regular laundering
- Turn the garment inside out.
- Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle.
- Use mild detergent.
- Do not use bleach, fabric softener or harsh chemicals.
- Hang dry when possible or tumble dry on low.
- Do not dry clean or iron directly on the print.
Care instructions matter because aggressive heat, chemicals and friction can shorten the life of decorated apparel. If you sell finished garments, give the customer these instructions with the order so the transfer is cared for correctly after it leaves your shop.
Documented DTF Performance Testing
Strong N Free is building a practical record of how our transfers perform under repeatable conditions. We do not publish an unverified wash-count, stretch or colour claim simply because it sounds impressive. Completed results will identify the test conditions so customers can understand what was actually evaluated.
Wash durability
We record the garment fabric, transfer batch, press settings, wash method and inspection points for lifting, cracking, wear or fading.
Stretch and recovery
We observe how an applied transfer responds to controlled stretching and whether its surface and edges recover after release.
Opacity
We review coverage and show-through on light and dark cotton, polyester and blended garments using documented application settings.
Colour accuracy
We compare printed colour targets with approved references under consistent lighting while recording the printer, media and production settings.
Published results may include the test date, garment, transfer type, heat-press settings, laundering conditions, number of completed cycles and photographs where they improve understanding. Actual performance can still vary with artwork, garment construction, press calibration, pressure and customer laundering.
DTF Pressing Questions
Are Strong N Free transfers hot peel?
Yes. Peel the carrier immediately after the first press. Pull it quickly while keeping the film low and close to the garment, then complete the 4-second finishing press with a clean Teflon sheet.
Why did only one edge lift?
One-sided lifting usually points to uneven pressure, a cold area on the platen or an obstruction such as a seam. Confirm the garment is flat, verify platen temperature and make sure the full design receives equal contact.
Can I press polyester?
Many polyester garments can be decorated with DTF, but dye migration and heat sensitivity vary. Check the garment manufacturer’s guidance and test in an inconspicuous area before production.
Should I change the time or temperature first?
Begin by confirming actual temperature and pressure. Avoid changing multiple variables together. If the press is calibrated and contact is even, test one small adjustment at a time and record the result.
