DTF Pressing Guide: Temperature, Pressure, Time and Peel
HEAT PRESS APPLICATION GUIDE
Understand the four variables behind a successful press and troubleshoot lifting before decorating a full garment run.
Follow the instructions supplied with the transfer
DTF films and adhesive systems are not identical. Use the current pressing instructions provided for the specific Strong N Free product rather than relying on a setting copied from another supplier. Confirm whether the transfer is hot, warm or cold peel and whether a finishing press is recommended.
Temperature activates the adhesive
Too little heat may leave adhesive partially activated, causing edges or fine details to lift. Excessive heat can affect polyester, scorch sensitive garments, increase dye migration or change the transfer surface. Verify platen temperature with appropriate testing equipment if results differ across the press.
Pressure creates full contact
Pressure is often the overlooked variable. The platen must bring the transfer into consistent contact with the garment, including textured areas. Seams, zippers, collars and pockets can prevent even contact. Use a pressing pillow or position the print area so raised construction does not hold the platen away from the design.
Time and peel complete the process
Start timing only when the press is fully closed. Open the press smoothly and peel according to the product instructions. If the design lifts, stop rather than pulling the entire film away. Reposition the carrier, protect the surface and repress while reviewing heat, pressure and garment obstacles.
Run a controlled test
Prepress the garment when instructed to remove moisture and wrinkles. Test one transfer on the actual garment style, record the settings and inspect edges after cooling. For polyester or performance fabrics, also watch for dye migration and heat marks. Production consistency comes from documented settings, not repeated guessing.
Professional checklist
- Use the instructions for the exact transfer
- Verify temperature instead of trusting the display alone
- Keep seams outside the pressing area
- Use consistent firm pressure
- Test one garment before the complete run
Frequently asked questions
Answers before you print
Why are the edges lifting?
Common causes include inadequate heat, insufficient or uneven pressure, too short a press, moisture, incorrect peel timing or a seam preventing contact.
Should I prepress the garment?
Follow the product instructions. A short prepress can remove moisture and wrinkles, but excessive preheating may affect sensitive fabrics.
Why do two heat presses behave differently?
Calibration, platen flatness, pressure mechanisms and heat distribution vary. Record successful settings for each machine.
Where are the current Strong N Free instructions?
