UV DTF transfers let you add detailed, full-colour designs to many hard, smooth products without a heat press. They are popular for tumblers, glass cans, mugs, phone cases, laptops and branded accessories.
The transfer arrives in layers. You apply the design with pressure, then remove the carrier film to leave the printed artwork on the surface.
What does UV DTF mean?
UV DTF stands for ultraviolet direct-to-film. The artwork is printed and cured using UV technology, then combined with an adhesive transfer layer. Unlike garment DTF, UV DTF is intended for hard surfaces and does not require heat to apply.
The finished decoration is designed to be vibrant, glossy, waterproof, scratch-resistant and fade-resistant when applied to a suitable surface and cared for correctly.
What can UV DTF be applied to?
UV DTF works best on hard, smooth, clean surfaces such as:
- tumblers and glass cans;
- mugs and other drinkware;
- glass, metal, ceramic and acrylic;
- many smooth plastics;
- laptops and tablets;
- phone cases and accessory cases;
- signs, boxes and other rigid promotional products.
Test first when the surface has a special coating, powder finish or unknown plastic composition.
Surfaces to avoid
UV DTF is not intended for fabric or other flexible materials. Adhesion may also be unreliable on rough, porous, dusty, oily, heavily textured or silicone surfaces. A design cannot make full contact when it bridges deep texture or a tight curve.
Avoid placing transfers where they will contact food directly or sit on a drinking rim.
How the transfer layers work
A UV DTF transfer normally includes a backing layer, the printed adhesive design and a clear carrier film. Pressure moves the design from the backing onto the product. The clear film holds all parts in position until the artwork has bonded to the surface.
This makes it possible to apply separate letters and detailed shapes together without placing each piece individually.
How to apply a UV DTF sticker
- Clean the surface. Remove dust, grease and fingerprints with an appropriate lint-free cleaner. Let the item dry completely.
- Plan the position. Measure and mark reference points if the design must be centred.
- Prepare the transfer. Rub or squeegee the clear film so every part of the design is held securely.
- Remove the backing. Peel it away slowly while checking that the complete design stays on the clear carrier.
- Align before contact. Hold the transfer slightly above the item. Adhesive bonds quickly, so avoid touching the surface until placement is correct.
- Apply from one edge. Lower the transfer gradually and press it down to reduce trapped air.
- Squeegee firmly. Work across the complete design, paying extra attention to small letters and edges.
- Remove the clear film slowly. Peel it back at a low angle. If any part lifts, lay the film down, squeegee that area again and continue.
How to apply a cup wrap
Before removing the backing, dry-fit the wrap around the cup and confirm the position. A straight reference line can help prevent the design from rising or falling as it wraps around the curve.
- Clean and dry the cup thoroughly.
- Align one edge of the wrap.
- Anchor a small section first.
- Smooth the wrap around the cup gradually.
- Press firmly and squeegee out air as you go.
- Slowly remove the top film, re-squeegeeing any area that lifts.
Do not stretch the transfer around the cup. Stretching can distort the artwork and reduce adhesion.
UV DTF care instructions
- Hand wash decorated drinkware only.
- Do not soak the item for long periods.
- Avoid abrasive scrubbers and harsh chemicals.
- Do not pick at design edges.
- Keep the decoration away from direct contact with a drinking rim.
Although a properly applied transfer is designed to be waterproof, hand washing is required to protect the design and the decorated item.

Use a custom-size UV DTF upload when you only need a couple of designs. If you need more designs, sizes or copies, a UV DTF gang sheet usually makes better use of the available space.
