Temperature matters when applying a DTF transfer, but pressure, timing, peeling and moisture control are just as important. Use a reliable heat press and test one transfer before beginning a large run.
The current Strong N Free standard below is the starting point for our DTF transfers. If your order includes different instructions, follow the instructions supplied with that transfer.
Strong N Free DTF press settings
- Temperature: 310°F
- First press: 8 seconds
- Pressure: heavy, even pressure
- Wait before peeling: none — peel immediately
- Peel: peel fast, keeping the film low and close to the garment
- Second press: 4 seconds with a Teflon sheet
Step-by-step DTF pressing instructions
- Prepare the garment. Make sure the application area is flat, dry and free of seams, zippers or other raised areas that could reduce pressure.
- Set the press to 310°F. Allow the heat press to reach a stable temperature. A separate temperature strip or infrared thermometer can help identify an inaccurate platen.
- Position the transfer. Place the printed side against the fabric and confirm that the design is straight and centred.
- Press for 8 seconds. Apply heavy, even pressure across the complete design. Do not open the press early.
- Peel immediately—do not wait. As soon as the press opens, peel the film fast while keeping it low and close to the garment.
- Repress for 4 seconds. Cover the design with a clean Teflon sheet and press again. This final press helps finish the surface and bond.
Why heavy, even pressure matters
A heat press can display the correct temperature while still giving poor results if the platen pressure is too light or uneven. Thick seams, pockets and collars can hold the platen away from the design. Use a pressing pillow or reposition the garment so the transfer sits on a flat pressing area.
A household iron is difficult to control because it does not provide consistent pressure, time or temperature across the full design.
Test before a production run
Fabric finishes, garment dyes and heat sensitivity vary. Always test on a spare item or an inconspicuous area, especially with polyester, nylon or other heat-sensitive materials. Confirm that the garment can tolerate the stated temperature and pressure.
If the test requires a modified setting, record it so every garment in the run is pressed consistently.
Moisture control in cold weather
Transfers can absorb moisture during storage or shipping, particularly in winter. Moisture may interfere with pressing and can affect the film or adhesive.
- Cut the transfers apart if needed.
- Let cold transfers warm to room temperature overnight before pressing.
- Store them flat in a sealed zip-lock bag.
- Add silica gel packs to help control humidity.
- Keep unused transfers away from damp areas and rapid temperature changes.
Troubleshooting common DTF pressing problems
The design lifts while peeling
Stop the peel, lay the film back down and press again. Check that the press is actually reaching 310°F and that the design received heavy, even pressure.
Only one area fails to stick
Uneven pressure is likely. Look for a seam, collar, pocket, zipper or press alignment issue beneath the problem area.
The garment becomes shiny or discoloured
The fabric may be sensitive to heat or pressure. Stop and test a lower-risk area before continuing. Follow the garment manufacturer’s decoration limits.
The design wrinkles after pressing
Keep the garment flat and avoid stretching it while the transfer is hot. Confirm that the first press and final repress are applied evenly.
Washing and care
Allow the decorated garment to cool fully before handling or packing it. For the longest life, follow Strong N Free’s current care recommendation: hand wash and hand dry. Turn the garment inside out, avoid harsh bleach and do not iron directly on the transfer.
